Happy May May Day

May Day

May Day

Don’t laugh but I know I have heard of May Day but to be honest I had no idea what it was. Today I decided to Wiki it. This is what the almighty Wiki says:

Traditional May Day celebrations

May Day is related to the Celtic festival of Beltane and the Germanic festival of Walpurgis Night. May Day falls exactly half a year from November 1, another cross-quarter day which is also associated with various northern European pagan and the year in the Northern hemisphere, and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous celebrations.
As Europe became Christianized, the pagan holidays lost their religious character and either changed into popular secular celebrations, as with May Day, or were merged with or replaced by new Christian holidays as with Christmas, Easter, Pentecost and All Saint’s Day. In the twentieth century, many neopagans began reconstructing the old traditions and celebrating May Day as a pagan religious festival again.
Origins
The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times, with the festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, and the Walpurgis Night celebrations of the Germanic countries. It is also associated with the Gaelic Beltane. Many pagan celebrations were abandoned or Christianized during the process of conversion in Europe. A more secular version of May Day continues to be observed in Europe and America. In this form, May Day may be best known for its tradition of dancing the maypole dance and crowning of the Queen of the May. Various Neopagan groups celebrate reconstructed (to varying degrees) versions of these customs on May 1st.
The day was a traditional summer holiday in many pre-Christian European pagan cultures. While February 1 was the first day of Spring, May 1 was the first day of summer; hence, the summer solstice on June 25 (now June 21) was Midsummer. In the Roman Catholic tradition, May is observed as Mary’s month, and in these circles May Day is usually a celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this connection, in works of art, school skits, and so forth, Mary’s head will often be adorned with flowers in a May crowning. Fading in popularity since the late 20th century is the giving of “May baskets,” small baskets of sweets and/or flowers, usually left anonymously on neighbours’ doorsteps.

Personally I see this as being quite interesting…celebrating nature…I know a scary concept but I like it.  I like the idea of celebrating nature and spring.  It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside so today I will say Happy May Day and spread the warmth!

The Beagles Green Tips for Turkey Day

Green Turkey Day Tips
Green Turkey Day Tips

Turkey Day is almost here and every year I post plenty of do it yourself decorations, crafts and activities to green up your Thanksgiving. There are some tips I mention over and over because they are that important. Thanksgiving has become a holiday of gluttony and not thanks for anything in my opinion. Try really being thankful this year and try to give back to the earth.

1. Save the seeds from your dinner and plant them when you can. You can also include the dried and cleaned seeds in a holiday gift for people who attended your Thanksgiving. Give them something to remind them how thankful they should be. You should be thankful for those seeds, they gave you a great meal.  Maybe if properly cared for you can serve those very veggies at your next holiday meal.

2. STAY LOCAL! Get your produce from local farm stands or local grocers. This season for fall harvesting didn’t do that well for some fruits and veggies. I know by me apples took a hard hit locally. You want to keep your neighborhood from becoming a ghost town? You want to make sure you have places to spend your money near you than purchase from around you. Not at the chain places at the Mom and Pop places. Helping your community helps you.

3. Compost all of your leftovers. If you can’t give things away, eat them all or reuse them in other recipes compost them for your yard. No need to throw food into the trash. Depending on what we have I make yummy meals for our pets. I know I am thankful for them so I share to make sure they know it.

4. Use as little packaging and throw away utensils as possible. I personally don’t appreciate disposable items. Not because of their wastefulness but because I feel like you are telling your guests you don’t have the time for real utensils or that they aren’t worth it. I understand disposing is easy but you can put that much more effort into a meal you have slaved all day over and make it look that much nicer. Again, remember show your guests you are Thankful for them!

5. Conserve Energy where you can. Your house is going to obviously get hot with all of the cooking, eating and people in the near vicinity. Turn your heat down or off (depending on the temp. outside) and open some windows. Let’s not forget to not turn every light and electrical gadget on in the house the entire time. While people are cooking try to get people to go outside and be active. Don’t have multiple tv’s, video games and lights on in the house. Force your friends and family to spend time with each other. You will be thankful you saved on your bill the month before the real spending begins.

6. Potluck? I know some people take pride in cooking the whole meal but think of the time and energy everyone saves if they are in charge of bringing one or two things. Everyone gets to actually sit, relax and enjoy time with their friends and family. Try it, you might be thankful that you did!

7. NO TURKEY PLEASE!!! I can read off a ton of statistics about how horribly turkeys are treated and the processes but that isn’t going to make most of you listen. I don’t expect all of you to listen but I hope some do. There are plenty of delicious options to having turkey on your plate. The photo is Tofurkey which looks delish! You can go with other less traditional and or vegan dishes. Get creative. Just because it is called Thanksgiving aka Turkey Day doesn’t mean we can’t change it to Tofurkey Day. If they called it Horse day would we have to eat horse????

Green Halloween 2011

GREEN HALLOWEEN

Green Halloween

Every year I like to do a list of things you can do to help make your Halloween a bit greener for everyone. Here are some trends I noticed last year that I thought would be great to make traditions! I also did some research on other green articles that had excellent tips for this years green Halloween attempts.

1. Make your own costumes! You know you have most of the supplies at home so get on with it. Yes, it can be time consuming and maybe it won’t always look as amazing as a store bought one but DIY will save you money and probably force you to be more creative if you lack sewing skills. I know I have said it before but do you want to spend a ton of money on something you might get one use out of?

2. Buy only organic or vegan candy. Make sure you know where your candy is coming from and what is in it. You might inspire someone else to go green as well. Generally kids don’t know or care as long as they see candy. On holiday’s like this it is about quantity for them not quality so sneak in some good stuff and who knows it might become their new favorite kind.

3. Yeah I’m going to say it…REUSABLE BAGS! I know the pumpkins are traditional but they are crap! Places like Nubius Organics have reusable Halloween bags or make your own! You need things to keep your children occupied in the colder months right! Have them do some work and get creative. You can again save some money.

4. Have a neighborhood Halloween party. Help keep your children save and coordinate with other neighbors on food, costumes and activities. This way you can make sure everyone does their part and most importantly trick or treaters can stay safe. I have notice around me many of the schools host the parties or parents will have one to keep children off of the streets. This cuts down on litter and destruction that generally happens on Halloween not to mention on transportation.

5. Make your own decorations. You know you have ones that you are considering throwing out or some creepy things you have in your attic or basement. Get to using them! You can save money (see a theme here) and reuse stuff you were probably going to throw away. If you have kids you know you have stuff around the house that is “crafty”. Make it a game for your children and get a little cleaning done at the same time. Take time to fix up old or broken decorations.

6. Go local when you need your pumpkins, gourds and produce. This is a great time of year to go to farm stands and local stores. They have amazing produce now! I know in some areas the weather hit pretty hard but you can get your corn stalks and hay from a farm near you. You know a house with real decorations opposed to fake plastic ones is way creepier! Plus you are helping out your local community.

These are all simple and possibly repetitive ways to keep it green. If you follow these simple steps for the years to come you can really impact your children, home and neighborhood! You know that will make you feel down right special so do it!

Are You Keeping Your Labor Day Green

Go Green for Labor Day

Go Green for Labor Day

I know most of us have off of work this Monday September 5th for Labor Day and we love to go out and shop the amazing sales everyone, even green businesses, are having but have you considered partying, shopping or wasting? Why not take the time to clean your yard, fix broken things around the house or even better do some fun crafts from things that have been lying around the house.

I thought I would share my Labor Day weekend plans/ideas and maybe they will inspire you to do the same!

1. Clean up our yard. After the hurricane our garden and lawn is covered in leaves, branches and garbage which needs to be sorted through and recycled. I will also keep an eye out for things I can use to make crafts for this weekend.

2. Get veggies and herbs out of my garden that are ready to be picked.

3. Cooking for the week using what I have gotten from my garden and from around the house that has been sitting there waiting to be used.

4. Decorate my house for Halloween. I have been waiting all summer to decorate and since the weather has been much cooler lately I see no reason not to.

5. Clean and organize the house. There have been some cabinets, closets and drawers that I have been ignoring that need some organization. In the process I can put things aside to use in crafts.

6. Work out! Why not get your fitness on while you have a 3 day weekend! Healthy minds start with healthy bodies. Plus if you are putting all of this effort into cleaning up the environment you can save some time for yourself right?

7. Find fun fall crafts to do for Halloween, fall or back to school anything. Remember to use the items you found from your yard or when cleaning out your closets, cabinets and closets.

8. Have family time. Play games, watch a movie or eat a family meal. You have 3 whole days to spend together make the most of it. Take this time to learn more about how your family can be greener!

9. Take time to relax. Read a book instead of watching television. Make some at home spa treatments for yourself. Take a nice bath to release the stresses from your daily life.

Women’s Equality Day

Women's Equality Day

Women's Equality Day

I will admit I have never heard of Women’s Equality Day. Women’s Equality Day is to celebrate the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote. Although the Proclamation below says the 19th Amendment secured more than just the female right to vote it enforced the original idea of this nation that all people are created equal. I think most of us know that really isn’t all that true. We pretend it is but when the majority gets uncomfortable with something they are more likely to shut it down than embrace it. I posted the below Proclamation to remind us of how hard the Women before us fought for their belief in what was right and to maybe rekindle something in us to keep fighting for our planet and equality. The social media I feel sometimes dulls our senses a bit as to what should really be done to save our planet. Our words are not enough to get the job done.
As you can see below the proclamation talks a good game but I had no idea this holiday existed really and August 26th has come and gone many times with me never hearing a mention of Women’s Equality Day. This is an excellent example how a Proclamation signed by our former president sounds really nice on a piece of paper but actions speak louder than words.
This happens to be my favorite part of the proclamation in light of many things going on in America currently that really just prove this statement to be untrue not only for women but for many Americans of all different ethnicities, races and religions “The ratification of the 19th Amendment was an important step toward ensuring that the civil and political rights guaranteed by the Constitution would truly be the equal rights of all Americans.”.

A PROCLAMATION

Seventy-four years ago, the 19th Amendment was ratified,
granting women the right to vote after many years of painstaking
struggle and hard work by courageous suffragists. Empowered by
the efforts of the brave and pioneering women who came before
them, women today have secured positions as leaders in industry,
government, and academia. They serve as role models in every
aspect of our society.

The 19th Amendment did more than secure the right to vote
for women. It recognized and affirmed the fundamental principle
upon which this great Nation was founded — equality — “that
all [persons] are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The ratification
of the 19th Amendment was an important step toward ensuring that
the civil and political rights guaranteed by the Constitution
would truly be the equal rights of all Americans.

By recognizing this previously disenfranchised segment of
our society, the 19th Amendment became one of the landmark civil
rights laws in America, standing side by side with the
Emancipation Proclamation, and the 13th, 14th, and 15th
Amendments. This year also marks the 4th anniversary of the
Americans with Disabilities Act, the 30th anniversary of the
Civil Rights Act of 1964, as well as the 40th anniversary of
Brown v. Board of Education. These laws and that pivotal
decision, along with the 19th Amendment, have marked the history
of our Nation’s progress in guaranteeing that every member of
our society is treated equally under the law.

We observe “Women’s Equality Day” to commemorate the
ratification of the 19th Amendment almost three-quarters of a
century ago. As we do so, we also honor the important
contributions and achievements of women in this country, and we
commit ourselves anew to fulfilling our obligation to promote
equality for all Americans.

The famous woman suffragist, Helen H. Gardener, advised the
Congress in calling for passage of the 19th Amendment:

Let us either stop our pretence before the nations of the
earth of being a republic and having “equality before the
law” or else let us become the republic we pretend to be.

To further celebrate and commemorate the 19th Amendment
this year, let us not take for granted our precious right to
vote, and let us rededicate ourselves to removing the barriers
that remain in women’s paths.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, WILLIAM J. CLINTON, President of the
United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in
me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby
proclaim August 26, 1994, as Women’s Equality Day. I call upon
the citizens of our great Nation to observe this day with
appropriate programs and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand
this eighteenth day of August, in the year of our Lord
nineteen hundred and ninety-four, and of the Independence of
the United States of America the two hundred and nineteenth.

Is Your 4th Going to be Green?

Green Fourth of July

I understand that the 4th is all about the red, white and blue but let us not for get the most important color in our pallet GREEN! As with many holiday’s the 4th of July is full of over indulgence. You may not be able to keep fireworks from going off but you can do your part to make your 4th of July as green as possible.

1. Don’t use disposables. If you are having a party or going to one please make sure to use reusable or biodegradable  utensils. If you prepare ahead of time you can keep the dish use to a minimum and there are plenty of kinds of drink cup markers to keep everyone from using every cup in the house.

2. Purchase your menu as locally and organically as you can. No need to go crazy with your food. BBQ menus can be simple and healthy. No one wants to eat a ton of food on a hot summer day anyway.

3. Keep the noise pollution to a minimum. Fireworks are going to be loud enough so there is no reason to have music blasting at every house on the block. Be considerate of your neighbors, animal and people alike.

4. Get active! It is nice outside go swimming, bike riding, or for a walk. Set up a volley ball or badmitton net. There are plenty of activities you can do on summer days and since the days are longer you have alot of time to stay out and play.

5. Use solar lighting or candles once it gets dark. I know everyone wants to stay out long enough to see the fireworks but don’t leave a million lights on outside it is just plain wasteful. The sun shines much longer in the summer so let solar lighting gather as much as it can to save up for the evening festivities!

6. Don’t use fireworks! There are plenty of community/town shows to see. Fireworks are really harmful to the environment so the less they are used the better. Not only are they dangerous and illegal in some states they are just for vanity. Create your ownhome made light crafts or watch other peoples. You don’t need to celebrate America’s independence with fireworks, create your own less harmful celebrations and traditions.  After all that is what we wanted independence for anyway right?
