Two Toned Cork Apron

I was perusing one of my favorite online stores the other day looking for fun green things to present to my faithful readers and I found a few super cute, really interesting and just plain fun items that could work in almost any home. My major issue with ethical home products are that they are usually ridiculously expensive, look “reused” or have no thought behind it. In that they are bland and design/aesthetics didn’t really have a part in the development process. I understand that pricing for some products is necessary due to the process the items may have to go through to be made and usable. I still feel that an integral part of being ethical is obviously pricing. I feel like what is the point of making an item ethical when you have to spend an arm and a leg for it. I realize I have mentioned this before but to me a part of being ethical and conscious is being affordable otherwise it isn’t very useful for helping the masses. Here are a few super cute things I found at Uncommon Goods that I would enjoy owning myself.

Upcycled Zip Wallet

Upcycled Zip Wallet

Product Description: Upcycled Zip Wallet’s raw materials once spent their days lounging around the beaches of Bali. That sounds lovely, except that those materials are actually plastic bags. Billions of plastic bags are used every year, and many of them find their way to the ocean, where they can be damaging or fatal to marine life.
For each wallet, ten of those wayward bags are reclaimed from the shoreline, cleaned, cut and crafted into a durable cover. Inside are accordion dividers to keep your own resources organized, and an inner zippered pocket for your valuables. Because of the upcycled nature of the materials, each one will have a unique combination of bright colors. Because these wallets are handmade of recycled materials, each is one of a kind. Made in Bali, Indonesia

Recycled Ceiling Tin Photo Frames

Recycled Ceiling Tin Photo Frames

Product DescriptionRecycled Ceiling Tin Photo Frame Add vintage charm to your photos with textured, metal frames. The intricate rococo patterns are actually pressed tin ceiling tiles that once adorned homes and shops around the Northeast. Salvaged from crumbling buildings and remodeling projects, artist Margaret Taylor turns them into rustic frames. Due to the reclaimed nature of the materials, colors and patterns will vary. Handmade in Georgia

Two Tone Cork Apron

Two Tone Cork Apron

Product Description: The Two Tone Cork Apron is crafted from ultra-thin sheets of cork, a sustainably harvested material that is supple, durable, and naturally water resistant. Derived from the bark of Cork Oak trees, the material’s natural veining and stippled appearance gives a rich earthiness that is unexpected in a typically textile-based accessory. The dark-stained cork is set off nicely by the contrasting, lighter natural color of the ample central pocket, which is the perfect catchall for cooking utensils, towels or recipe cards. The apron is stitched around the edges and is reinforced with a cotton backing. Made in Portugal.

Fire Extinguisher Pendant Lamp

Fire Extinguisher Pendant Lamp

Product Description: Fire Extinguisher Pendant Lamps are crafted from spent fire extinguisher canisters. The artist Valentino Llegada hand paints each one in shades of black and gray. The aluminum material is lightweight and sturdy, and its interior is left with its metallic finish, which helps reflect the light out into the room. Available in two styles – cylindrical or with rounded edges – created by using either the top or the bottom of the canister. Comes fitted with a light socket and cord, and is ready to hang with included screw hooks. Cord does not have built-in switch. Handmade in Florida. Sold individually

Gordon Set of 3 Multicolor Jeweled Handcrafted Candleholders

How beautiful are these candle holders!!  When I first saw them I thought they were made from recycled magazines but they are actually made from mango wood.  Mango wood is considered the new bamboo because of its ability to renew itself.  It isn’t hard enough to be used as flooring but can have many other decorative uses.  Apparently once a mango tree reaches 5 ft in diameter and over 90ft tall it no longer bears fruit.   The Gordon Jeweled Candle Holders are great for a gift or to decorate your home.  They can go with almost any color scheme.  The candle holders are a bit on the pricey side but for sustainable handcrafted home decor the price is quite reasonable.

Product Description: These eco friendly and exotic candle holders feature bright jewel tone accents. Spice up any setting!
Mango Wood is a sustainable wood. Asian farmers plant this tree for its fruit, which is picked and exported. Only when the tree stops producing fruit does it get timbered.

Tub O’Carbon Odor Buster

This is a nifty idea! I remember my parents and grandparents using a box of baking soda for everything odor related. Now the Tub O’Carbon does all of that and even helps slow the process of food going bad! I love that. There is nothing more disappointing than realizing you have wasted food.

Product Description: Tub O’Carbon Odor Buster is the safe and natural way to remove odors in any enclosed space. Better than baking soda and safer than chemical sprays and fragrances.
How does it work? Activated carbon is a natural substance specially treated to open up millions of tiny pores that trap odors, chemicals and gases. This type of carbon is used in gas masks, in hospitals and by large food-storage facilities. You can use it anywhere in the home or office including the fridge, freezer, trash can, next to cat litter, in a diaper pail, in a sports bag, closets, lockers, musty storage, your car, etc.

Favorite Feature: The Odor Buster adsorbs ethylene gas released by produce, slowing down the rotting process.
•Eliminates the need to air out your fridge

The Robomow

Robomow

Robomow

I know the Robomow is expensive but the lazy beagle in myself really wants this. I am not the biggest fan of mowing the lawn. It takes forever and makes my allergies go crazy. Here is a description of the Robomow and why you should love it besides the fact that it comes with Free Shipping:

Tired of pushing or riding that lawn mower of yours for seemingly endless amounts of time, every week? Robomow’s RL 2000 is the perfect solution to give you more time doing what you love, instead of mowing the lawn. This robotic lawn mower is recommended for large lawns between 12,900 and 17,200 square feet. It comes with a base station for automated storage, charging and easy mower scheduling. You can schedule this mower to run day or night without bothering your neighbors: these machines will run at a noise level as low as 65 decibels when in eco-mode. To give a comparison, this is the same amount of noise generated by a normal conversation.

What makes the Robomow Green?
Robomow is as green as the grass it mows.
From saving energy to the way it cuts the grass, Robomow is making as less impact on the environment as possible.
With new ingenious technology and innovative grasscycling techniques, the fully automatic lawnmowers are much easier to use, waste less energy, emit less air pollution and create less impact on the world around us.While mowing your lawn, Robomow cuts the grass into very fine cuttings and disperses them over the ground. These clippings decompose quickly and release beneficial organic nutrients and water into the soil. This results in a healthier and better-looking lawn and eliminates the need to collect and remove the clippings.

EcoNuts Soap is Eco-Interesting

Eco Nuts

Eco Nuts

Since I have a zoo living in my house (bf included) laundry builds up fast and although we try to stick to doing our laundry once a week to save water sometimes that just isn’t possible. I am a huge proponent of using biodegradable, organic and chemical free detergents and softeners. I don’t like detergents that smell too much. They never smell natural and I feel like if a detergent needs that much fragrance it is doing so because the laundry probably isn’t as clean as it should be. I’d rather have a fresh clean smell then some made up smell that doesn’t even exist in nature. What really gets my goat is some of these eco-detergents cost an arm and a leg. I never really understand that if the product is supposed to be natural have no harmful chemicals and whatever other attributes the product boasts why should it costs more than the harmful crap detergents. I always hear the excuse well to process it right or package it appropriately it is more costly. I really think that is a load of rubbish personally. Either way on my hunt for eco-awesome laundry solutions I stumbled upon EcoNuts. If you don’t know what a soap nut is click here, I didn’t know either but I will say they are quite an interesting little nut!
EcoNuts have hit my personal trifecta of green awesomeness 1. They package responsibly and don’t try to trick the consumer. 2. EcoNuts are found in nature and are a reasonable alternative to using harmful products without having to be manipulated to become a suitable green product. 3. The price is right! EcoNuts do not over charge their merchandise and because their packaging is so responsible they can’t even use it as an excuse for the high prices.  If you haven’t tried them yet you should!! If you have let me know how you liked Pure Citizen” target=”_blank”>EcoNuts!!

The Urbano

Urbano

Urbano

I found this today on Pinterest believe it or not and I am loving it. The Urbano is a trash can that stores extra plastic garbage bags in the can for you. I am not a fan of using plastic grocery bags but for recycling they can hold your recyclables and then be rinsed out and reused. I really just like the style of the can and that it holds your bag open. The design is simple and sleek but I like it. If you like it too you can pick your very own up at Uncommon Goods! Let me know if you like them too!
