Mandrill Ceramic Candleholder

Mandrill Ceramic Candleholder

It has been a long time since I have had a contest so I figured now is an excellent time to get back on the ball. I found these super cute Mandrill Candle Holders quite some time ago and think they are a great addition to any ones home. The artist, Putu Oka Mahendra makes his art in memory of his mother. He has this set of candle holders and other beautiful home decor items as well. I like Putu’s style and artistry. I think many of you would enjoy his style which is why I have decided to give away a set of his Mandrill Candle Holders. I have also given you some interesting information on what exactly a mandrill is because they are not only interesting they are kind of really cute to boot! CLICK HERE TO ENTER!!!

The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a primate of the Old World monkey (Cercopithecidae) family, closely related to the baboons and even more closely to the drill. It is found in southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo. Mandrills mostly live in tropical rainforests and forest-savanna mosaics. They live in groups called hordes. Mandrills have an omnivorous diet consisting mostly of fruits and insects. Their mating season takes place from June to October. Both the mandrill and the drill were once classified as baboons in genus Papio, but recent research has determined they should be separated into their own genus, Mandrillus. The mandrill is the world’s largest species of monkey. Charles Darwin wrote in The Descent of Man that “no other member in the whole class of mammals is coloured in so extraordinary a manner as the adult male mandrills.” The mandrill is classified as vulnerable by IUCN. The mandrill is the most colorful primate. It has an olive green or dark grey pelage with yellow and black bands and a white belly. Its hairless face has an elongated muzzle with distinctive characteristics such as a red stripe down the middle and protruding blue ridges on the sides. It also has red nostrils and lips, a yellow beard and white tuffs. The areas around the genitals and the anus are multi-colored, being colored red, pink, blue, scarlet, and purple. They also have pale pink ischial callosities. The coloration of the animal is more pronounced in dominant adult males. Both sexes have chest glands which are used in olfactory communication.

To enter the contest all you have to do is comment below with what kind of animal you think is interesting enough in real life to be made into a piece of home decor for your your home and why! Crayon Drip Pumpkin

Crayon Dripped Pumpkin

Crayon Drip Pumpkin

I love making my own decorations especially if I can reuse them year after year and for more than one occasion. You may have real or fake pumpkins left over from Halloween so why not put them to good use. If you have crayons that have about had it and are looking for something to do with them this is the perfect project for you and your family. This is a great project for schools or parties as well.  Here are two examples on how to have fun with designs!

Crayon Drip Pumpkin

Crayon Drip Pumpkin

Supplies:

Crayons (if you have fun crayons like glitter or glow in the dark, multi color crayons)
Hair Dryer (or lighter with parents supervision)
Fast Grab Tacky Glue
Pumpkin orange or white (real or fake)
Towel, Sheet or bag to cover the area where you will be working
Decorations (anything you want to use to put your personal touch to the craft)

Directions:

1. Make sure to remove all labels from the crayons as they will not be helpful as the crayons are being melted.
2. Make sure the pumpkin is clean and isn’t spoiling. You don’t want to spend time decorating it for it to go bad after your hard work.
3. Cover the area you are working on with a cloth to make sure you don’t drip on anything important.
4. Break crayons in half, you won’t need a whole crayon for 1 pumpkin.
5. Glue the crayons to the top of the pumpkin, they may not stay still otherwise, if you want to do a drip effect you can hold the crayon and heat it to drip in a pattern of your choice as well.
6. Once you are ready to melt go crazy! Make any design you want drip separately or together.  Have fun with it.

I always say get creative so if you have fun things you want to add to this craft go for it! Use glitter, buttons, broken pins, ribbons or anything you have been looking for an excuse to make use of. Add whatever you want to the pumpkin while the drippings are still wet. Glitter or even sequins would be fun. You could go get leaves, twigs and acorns. Make it your own!

Edible Art Supplies

Edible Art Supplies

Edible Art Supplies

Wee Can Too makes edible art supplies which are probably one of the coolest things I have seen. We know it is important to cultivate creativity in our youth but sometimes we have to consider the options of ruining the house or eating the supplies or even getting the art all over themselves instead. Even if a child doesn’t ingest the paint/marker/crayon etc. it can be just as scary when they get it all over them. The contents in some everyday art supplies are plain scary.
Wee Can Too has taken all of these fears into consideration to bring parents and teachers alike a slew of great supplies that are non-toxic, vegan, contain no wheat or sugar and are completely edible if the young artist decides to taste test their artwork. Wee Can Too offers 8 different edible art supplies that are sure to please parents and kids. You can also feel better when your pet wants to be helpful or investigate the scene and tracks paint all over the place or want to taste test the supplies as well you can be less nervous about expensive vet trips.
Wee Can Too is great for school too I think. Teachers can worry a little bit less about their students eating crayons or ruining their clothes during craft time or art class.  I really am excited and can’t wait to try some of these products myself.

Here is a little more about Wee Can Too:
The eco friendly, organically edible paints are amazing. They are completely safe for your kids and edible in case they decide to put their little hands into their mouth, which has been known to happen while finger painting. Already capturing the east coast market, we are moving to the Midwest with our finger paints, making baby, toddler, and children painting fun again! Wee Can Too is all the rage with mommy bloggers, autistic children for art therapy, babies, toddlers, and we would love to share them with you!

Don’t Throw Away Your Old CD’s

Don't Throw Away Your Old CD's

Don't Throw Away Your Old CD's

I have been cleaning out my house alot lately trying to organize and possibly upcycle things in my house I never use anymore. The other day I found a huge binder full of old CD’s I haven’t used in forever since I put all the music on my iPod. I didn’t want to throw them away as I had literally hundreds but I wasn’t sure how to make the best use of them. No one wanted them of course so I had to figure out something awesome to do with them. You see upcycled CD’s online and in stores often so I figured why can’ t I do the same. Here are some things I found online that I thought were cute.

1. The obvious use them as coasters. Glue either felt or some other cute fabric to it and you have automatic free coasters for your home. They make a super cute house warming gift and you can even decorate them if you want to add some personal flare.

2. Party decoration. Make flashy garland out of them for an event or even as permanent decor for your home. If you or maybe your child is a music lover why not string together some of their fave CD’s together and hang them from the ceiling or around the room as a border.

3. Make it art! Have unused frames at home? Take some CDs that are special to you and decorate them and hang them on the wall. This is also a perfect gift to give to someone that appreciates music and maybe a certain CD is special to them.

4. Use it as a party craft. Have no idea how to entertain a bunch of kids at a party. Hand out old CD’s and tell them to decorate them as they wish. Find cheap frames and some backing and let them make their own fun. Even go with the above and make their own coaster.

5. Bird Deterrent. Do you have birds that are always running into your glass doors or windows? Help them avoid hurting them selves by hanging a few on you doors and window so they can avoid flying head first into your house.

6. Are you a painter? Use them as pallets to mix your paint. There is already a hole in the middle for holding. You can keep clean them off easily and reuse them or keep them for mixing the same colors.

Do you have any fun uses for old CD’s? Let me know and I will post them on the Beagle!

For the guy who likes expensive gifts..
