Make Your Old Trays Look New

Collectors Serving Tray

Collectors Serving Tray

I love this idea! I happen to think that serving trays add a touch of class to any environment even if they are just purely decorative. I like even more that you won’t have to go out and buy one you can make your own out of an old serving tray you want to spruce up or if you find an unfinished one you can now make it your way.

Supplies:
Old Serving Tray (or new unfinished tray)
Collectible Cards, Magazine Cut outs or Playing Cards
Eco-Friendly Crafting Glue
Eco-Friendly Spray Adhesive
Clear Gloss EZ paint (an eco-friendly spray paint, if you have clear gloss spray paint at home any will do)
Crafty odds and ends you have been holding on to.

Instructions:
1. If you have an unfinished wood tray make sure it is sanded and smooth before starting to decorate.
2. Find your decorations. Whether you have playing cards, collectible cards (I would kind of like to see one done in Garbage Pail Kids cards lol). Try to plot out your decorating placement and strategy before gluing anything to the tray to make sure it looks right and fits together nicely.
3. Once you have decided on placement you can move on to gluing your items to the tray with the eco-friendly crafting glue (You can use hot glue or anykind of glue you have at home. The point is to use what you already have at home and not buy more.)
4. After everything is glued and has set for 10-15 minutes, spray the entire tray with spray adhesive just to make sure everything is secured to the tray. This also helps if you have glues gems or anything that isn’t completely flat onto the tray.
5. Once you have let the spray adhesive set for another 10 minutes or so you can begin to spray the tray with the clear gloss spray paint. I suggest multiple coats only because you plan on washing this item repeatedly after uses and you want to make sure you can keep the tray looking pretty and lasting as long as possible.

Eco-Easter

Eco-Easter

Eco-Easter

I loved Easter as a child less for the candy and more for the money wrapped eggs my parents would hide around the house for me.  I milked that until I was probably 20, and I am clearly not ashamed to admit it. Easter tends to be full of bad habits most of which are purchasing wasteful items, over indulging and teaching kids rabbits will leave you ginormous baskets full of a billion calories while hiding colored eggs that most people wind up throwing out or forgetting where they hid them in the first place. I am still confused as to where the Easter Bunny and Jesus met and decided this was how to handle the holiday but neither are around to ask so I guess we just have to deal with it. Being the responsible greenie I am and knowing you are as well here are some obvious ways to make your Easter go Eco!

1. Make your own baskets out of newspaper ,magazines or old fabric you have laying around. Make your children work for that candy! You can decorate them and use them for multiple years or donate them when you are finished. Best case if your basket is made out of newspaper or magazines recycle it!

2. You can also make your own eggs. Paper mache is always fun or I see alot of people purchasing wooden eggs
to color as well. I am a fan of the do-it-yourself options so find materials around the house that will be able to be recycled when you are finished. The best part is if all of the eggs don’t get found you won’t have a stinky mess on your hands. I have read you can knit your own eggs from bits of random yarn and wool you have lying around the house which I really think is a great idea and a skill everyone should possess.

3. Don’t purchase your children candy make it! If you make your own Easter treats you have a say to what and how much goes into the treats. Most of the Easter candy you see is gross and normally you wouldn’t let your children eat it so why let them on Easter. It can be sending a confusing message. My parents (probably because I was a chubby kid) would fill my basket with other things besides food that would last longer and I would appreciate more like outside games or Bath and Beauty stuff. Petit Appetit: Eat, Drink, and Be Merry: Easy, Organic Snacks, Beverages, and Party Foods for Kids of All Ages

4. Have a family or friend get together full of activities and good food. I have a huge family and although they still purchase tons of eggs they make a family event out Easter. We hide plastic eggs (that can be recycled or if you have made your own) filled with small amounts of chocolate around for the children to find. We have the children decorate things like cookies (which you can make organic and healthy and use things like fruits and veggies to decorate with) to keep everyone occupied. You leave only with that you make and left overs from the afternoons feast. This way there are no messy baskets full of plastic grass, no overdose on sweets and everyone gets their exercise and creativity flowing instead of sitting around pigging out. My family event could definitely be greened up but it is a little better.
5. If you must have real eggs use fruit, veggie and flower dyes to dye your eggs. You can learn alot and save money because the items you don’t use you can eat. Also plan the meals you will make with the eggs afterwards and only purchase enough eggs to fulfill those needs. You can make tie-died deviled eggs, egg salad, rainbow cobb salad or just eat the hard boiled eggs whole. If you poke a pin hole in the bottom of the eggs the dye can get in and color the actual egg. If you use the store bought kind you might not want to do this but since these eggs should be green the fruit, flower and veggie dyes are ok to eat. Eco-Eggs Easter Egg Coloring Kit

6. If you have old baskets you are determined to use baskets be conscious of what you put in them. Don’t buy plastic grass they make paper grass or if you have fun shaped hole punches and a paper shredder make your own grass which is way more fun. You can even decorate the grass anyway you want. Color it or put nail polish on it and make it your own. Why waste money when you have everything you need at home. Easter Grass Kit is super fun and a great new way to get easter grass.

7. Easter Meals, make the food look fun. Children get picky over things that look weird. Most of the time taste has nothing to do with it. If something looks or feels gross they won’t go near it. If you teach children early who fun being healthy can be they will grow up with this in mind and take it with them. If you use a little creativity it can go a long way and they might not even miss the candy.

Tread on My Shirt Please

Tread on My Shirt Please 2

Materials:
T-shirt (old or new)
Con-Tact paper (cardstock or any heavy paper)
Cardboard
Ecotools FacialSponge or Ecotools Cosmetic Sponges
Eco Kids Natural Plant Dye Eco Paint Set made in the USA
Old Shoes
Liqui-mark Ecolorgy Washables Broadline Markers

Directions:

1. Create a template from a piece of Con-Tact paper. (Draw your own design or download shapes).

2. Insert a piece of cardboard between the shirt layers to keep the paint from bleeding through to the other side of the shirt. Remove the paper backing from the contact paper template (if you are using it) and press it onto the shirt. (you can use cardboard or cardstock as your template too!).

3. Lay a towel or table cloth down under everything in case of a mess.

4. Using Ecotools Cosmetic Sponges , dab Eco Paint onto a clean shoe tread. Practice printing on a piece of paper first to make sure you like the design, then gently press the paint-covered tread onto the shirt, adding more Eco Paint and repeating as needed.

5. You can also add to your shirt by using Liqui-mark Ecolorgy Washables Broadline Markers or by hot gluing odds and ends you have around the house that you didn’t know what to do with. Buttons, broken jewelry, hair clips, anything!

6. Once you are done painting, wash the shoe immediately with soap and water and set somewhere safe to dry. Let the shirt dry completely before peeling off the template, then wash the shirt according to the paint manufacturer’s instructions. It might be best to wash the shirt inside out in cold water for the first few washes to make sure the colors don’t bleed and get on other items just in case.

Green Graffiti?

Moss Paint

Funny enough I found the green graffiti idea due to a tweet made by Andy Dick of all people. I saw the title Moss Graffiti  and I had to see what green graffiti was all about.
All you need is: a handful of moss, water, water-retention gardening gel, & buttermilk and you are on your way to making your own live graffiti that is probably better for the environment and better than painting on other peoples property. I am thinking green graffiti probably isn’t even illegal but don’t quote me on that.
I am not sure how green this really is but I do think this is a good idea to do at home as a project. Its an interesting activity to say the least.
I think creativity wise you could do fun things with green graffiti and maybe even figure out ways to make the moss different colors and possibly even include other plants in the mixture to see if they would grow as well. Spring is coming and there are plenty of things to plant but green graffiti would change up your garden up a bit. Try it as a science project for school or as an at home project with some friends! I know I am going to try some green graffiti at my home this spring! If you do send us pictures and we will post them on The Beagle!
As always creating more vegetation in our world is a plus so green graffiti earns points for that but I don’t suggest trying this on property that isn’t yours unless given permission. Green graffiti can be used to cover up difficult to remove paint graffiti which might be a more cost effective way to deal with unwanted graffiti and a good lesson for graffiti artists because painting over moss might be difficult. This might deter people from using spray paint which isn’t a bad thing either so maybe green graffiti is greener than I thought!

Soda Stream Fountain Jet

SodaStream Home Soda Makers

I am a huge water drinker. I don’t really drink much soda or juice and I’m not a fan of energy drinks unless it is coffee or tea. I do however love the fizziness of sodas and carbonated drinks. I have been fully addicted to seltzer for years but they come in plastic bottles that just create alot of waste. I always recycle but I really wanted a way to have my yummy bubbles and not make more garbage so over the holiday’s my wonderful father purchased a Soda StreamFountain Jet for us! I absolutely love it. The value set comes with a test packet of all of the different flavors including an energy flavor, which I am interested to try just for funzies. The Fountain Jet has already saved me multiple trips to the store which means I have used less gas, I have saved money and created less waste and I have the fizziest, yummiest water ever!

I am kind of interested in trying the many flavors Soda Stream offers in syrups but in an effort to attempt to make soda better for you Soda Streamhas sweetened some of the flavors with Splenda. While I applaud their efforts to make less crappy drinks, soda is soda anyway you look at it. The other part of their do-it-yourself drink is you add the syrup yourself. You can put a tiny amount of flavor to make a mild soda or if you are making a cocktail this could be a quick and fun alternative to purchasing mixers. Personally I prefer actual lemon or lime juice in my water. You could get any fruit you like orange, berry or grapefruit and squeeze it into your seltzer if you like!
Soda Stream also has an exchange program for their cartridges. When you have used up yours you can send them back to Soda Stream and they will send you more!
Over all this is one of the best presents I could have even gotten! I get all the seltzer I want and I am saving money and our environment. If you like soda or seltzer this is an inexpensive alternative to spending money on bottles and bottles that will most likely not be recycled.
