Batty Bites

Batty Bites

I love this time of year and I know I have mentioned how much I love Halloween. I found this super adorbs simple party fun recipe on All You Magazine. These are the kind of appetizers that everyone will enjoy and you won’t have to spend forever trying to get them right! I also like that they are simple enough to incorporate into other holidays. Add some fun shaped pretzels/crackers/treats and make them reindeer antlers or make a top hat and it can be a leprechaun! You can play with the cheeses and use different colored sesame seeds, nuts, cracker or chip crumbs to compliment the cheese ball. You can also make monster bites or witches maybe vampires and ghosts! Soo much fun! Get creative!

Ingredients:

1 (4 oz.) package organic cream cheese, softened
8 ounces soft, organic goat cheese, at room temperature
1/4 cup organic pesto
2 tablespoons organic coarse ground black pepper
2 tablespoons organic poppy seeds
8 organic pitted black olives, sliced
32 organic whole pepper corns
32 triangular organic tortilla chips (blue is fun but any color will do)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Mash together cream cheese, goat cheese and pesto.
2. Let chill for 40 minutes.
3. Shape mixture into 16 2-inch balls.
4. Roll in black pepper and poppy seeds to cover.
5. Press two olive slices into balls for eyes
6. Place peppercorns in centers for pupils.
7. Insert chip on either side of ball for wings and serve.

DIY “Febreze”

DIY "FEBREZE"

DIY “FEBREZE”

I literally just got this recipe a few minutes ago from one of my besties who swears by it and say her DIY version last longer and is much cheaper than purchasing ready-made fabric/home fresheners. Most people have these simple items at home and can make as much or as little as you want at a time. You can customize the scent of your freshener to the season or just your favorite smells. I always prefer to make my own products because you can usually save yourself money but you know exactly what the ingredients are. That always makes me feel more comfortable than buying something but I can’t lie that sometimes my homemade concoctions don’t always come out right.

Ingredients:

Your Favorite Liquid Fabric Softener (I prefer Method myself)
Baking Soda
Hot Water
Reusable Spray Bottlehttp://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=fashijonz-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00745X4UC

Directions:

1. Add 3 tbsp. Fabric Softener to empty spray bottle
2. Fill spray bottle with approximately 2 cups hot water slowly. {depending on size of bottle}
3. Add in 1 tbsp. Baking Soda
4. Mix once well and let it settle then mix again until the baking soda has completely dissolved.

Vegetarian Crescent Roll Taco Bake

Vegetarian Taco Bake

Vegetarian Taco Bake

I know I have mentioned probably one too many times how much I love Mexican food. Now that it is apparently football season and I am forced to spend time with people who are obsessed with the sport and the only thing that gives me a modicum of joy is making fun party food. Most of these football fans are terrified of vegetarian foods but I am on a mission to change that.  This comes with a warning however……do not surprise meat eaters with vegetarian meats without warning.  Often times if people aren’t used to eating vegetarian meat it has an effect on them and not warning them is just mean and cruel to them, you  and other party people.

Ingredients:

2 Crescent Roll Tubes
1 LB Ground Vegetarian Meat
1 Packet of Organic Taco Seasoning
1 1/2 cups Grated Organic Cheddar Cheese
Shredded Organic Lettuce
1 or 2 Diced Organic Tomatoes
1/2 Small Can Sliced Olives (optional)
Fat-Free Organic Sour cream (optional)
Organic Sliced Avacado (optional)

Instructions:
1. Lay out the two tubes of crescent pastry, thick sides in. Use some of the left over crescent rolls to to make the center a bit thicker.
2. Season and cook the vegetarian meat. I often add vegetables like grated carrots, onions, peppers ect. to my vegetarian meats.
3. Lay “meat” in a circle inside of the laid out crescent rolls.
4. Add cheese to the top
5. Pull over crescent rolls and tuck in under meat and cheese.
6. Follow the cook time on the crescent roll package.
7. Let cool slightly or add a small dish in the middle then add cheese, lettuce, tomato, black olives,
sour cream and anything else you want, in the middle as.

DIY Simple Salt Scrub

DIY Simple Salt Scrub

DIY Simple Salt Scrub

I really value the art of DIY. It is something that makes me happy especially when it comes to beauty products. Maybe it is just me but I feel like DIY beauty products seem more luxurious when you put the time and effort to make them your own. The more natural the product the better I feel they work and the better I feel about using them. Now that doesn’t mean you can’t mess up the recipe or find one that isn’t so spectacular but with anything DIY it is mainly trial and error. The same can be said for products you purchase in a store as well. At least when you make them yourself you know exactly what goes into your beauty product and how much. That isn’t always the case for store bought items.

Ingredients:

Sea Salt (any kind you have ready to use)
Organic Essential Oils (any scent or scents of your choice )
Oil (any oil except baby oil)

Directions:

1. Find a clean jar that is easy to scoop the scrub out of but that won’t leak and can be opened quickly in the shower. I would suggest using a plastic container as this does have oil and you are in the shower so a glass jar may be risky. Plastic has its disadvantages too. A plastic jar will absorb any essential oils you add into the scrub, and that means that you can never use the jar in any other purpose.
2. Choose a salt to use. Almost any kind can work for example; sea salt, Epsom salt, kosher salt, or table salt which is usually the cheapest. Table salt tends to have smaller granules, which means you don’t have to break up big salt clumps. Epsom salt has relaxing properties, while sea salt is often used in bath salts. You can also mix salts to have different textures in your scrub. When you have found a salt or salts that you like, fill about half of your container with it. I used sea salt because I had a huge container of it that I am sure I would never have used.
3. Pick an oil to mix with the salt. Almost any kind will do just not baby oil as it does not absorb into the skin. I had a few different kinds at home so I mixed olive oil with a small amount of coconut oil. Coconut is a favorite scent of mine and I considered not even using essential oils but being that I have plenty of them it couldn’t hurt to use both. Coconut oil is very good for your skin as is olive oil so mixing the both I thought might work very well and smell delish. I also added some honey to this mixture which is also supposed to be great for your skin but it isn’t a must.
4. Fill the jar with oil until the oil covers the salt. Make sure the oil gets on to all of the salt. I poured some oil in then shook around the salt and continued until the oil looked like it had covered all of the salt in the container. You can use a utensil such as a spoon or spatula to mix your oil and salt together as well if you like.
5. Add a few drops of essential oils into the mixture. Some popular scents used in many store bought scrubs are lavender (relaxing), peppermint (energizing), orange, lime/lemon, rose, sandalwood, and vanilla. Or you can try extracts, like vanilla, almond, peppermint and coconut. Stir the salt scrub after you put add the essential oil.
6. Use your salt scrub on particularly dry areas of your body. The scrub works especially well on hands and feet too. I use loofah gloves for my body and pumice for my feet. I put the salt scrub on the pumice and scrub my feet with that which removes the dead skin just as well as any pedi place does. If your skin feels a bit oily, you can wash it off with some soap or body wash, but it is not necessary because usually the skin would absorb all the oil depending on how much you added to your scrub. Your skin should feel soft, moisturized, and exfoliated. You don’t have to but for added moisture I lotion my body after I dry off to make sure I am fully moisturized.

Arguments about Animal Ethics

Arguments about Animal Ethics

Arguments about Animal Ethics

Arguments about Animal Ethics is clearly a text book but nevertheless I really thought this is an important subject to read up on. I am constantly having this discussion with people and their thought process on how meat gets on their plates or how that leather jacket came to be even why wearing fur in general is just plain gross. Most people don’t think passed the chicken they see walking around and the leg they nosh on at a back yard BBQ. I think many people can’t distinguish because they are so far removed from the processes it takes to make their food and clothing they don’t even think about it. My favorite example is of my friends who are Hindu and they take their religion very seriously. So as a part of their religion they cannot eat beef. Beef of any kind is not allowed in their home or business. Yet, they wear tons of leather all of the time. This makes no sense to me. They may choose not to eat beef not because of the ethical reasons but for religious but why is wearing it any different than eating it? The animal is still harmed in the process, is it not?
I think people who wear fur are just as removed. Now I am not trying to say I am a strict vegetarian or vegan in any way but I do understand how and where my food comes from. I have less of an issue with people eating meat (even if it does make me sad, even fish) than I do with them wearing animals, very specifically fur. People have no clue what happens to animals beyond house hold pets and even then people treat trash better than them sometimes. I feel like the masses only consider humans important and every living thing beyond that is less important and therefore can be treated any way we see fit. What a sad misconception, right? That quite possibly is the reason for the state our environment is in. Why there are perhaps so many indangered species. Arguments about Animal Ethics can help us all learn a bit about animal ethics in the process. Any little bit one person can change will make a difference. The more you know the more likely you are to pass on this information to someone else and so on.
Description: Bringing together the expertise of rhetoricians in English and communication as well as media studies scholars, Arguments about Animal Ethics delves into the rhetorical and discursive practices of participants in controversies over the use of nonhuman animals for meat, entertainment, fur, and vivisection. Both sides of the debate are carefully analyzed, as the contributors examine how stakeholders persuade or fail to persuade audiences about the ethics of animal rights or the value of using animals. The essays in this volume cover a wide range of topics, such as the campaigns waged by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (including the sexy vegetarian and nude campaigns), greyhound activists, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, food manufacturers, and the biomedical research industry, as well as communication across the human-nonhuman animal boundary and the failure of the animal rights movement to protest research into genetically modifying living beings. Arguments about Animal Ethics’ insightful analysis of the animal rights movement will appeal to communication scholars, as well as those interested in social change.

Mandrill Ceramic Candleholder

Mandrill Ceramic Candleholder

It has been a long time since I have had a contest so I figured now is an excellent time to get back on the ball. I found these super cute Mandrill Candle Holders quite some time ago and think they are a great addition to any ones home. The artist, Putu Oka Mahendra makes his art in memory of his mother. He has this set of candle holders and other beautiful home decor items as well. I like Putu’s style and artistry. I think many of you would enjoy his style which is why I have decided to give away a set of his Mandrill Candle Holders. I have also given you some interesting information on what exactly a mandrill is because they are not only interesting they are kind of really cute to boot! CLICK HERE TO ENTER!!!

The mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a primate of the Old World monkey (Cercopithecidae) family, closely related to the baboons and even more closely to the drill. It is found in southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo. Mandrills mostly live in tropical rainforests and forest-savanna mosaics. They live in groups called hordes. Mandrills have an omnivorous diet consisting mostly of fruits and insects. Their mating season takes place from June to October. Both the mandrill and the drill were once classified as baboons in genus Papio, but recent research has determined they should be separated into their own genus, Mandrillus. The mandrill is the world’s largest species of monkey. Charles Darwin wrote in The Descent of Man that “no other member in the whole class of mammals is coloured in so extraordinary a manner as the adult male mandrills.” The mandrill is classified as vulnerable by IUCN. The mandrill is the most colorful primate. It has an olive green or dark grey pelage with yellow and black bands and a white belly. Its hairless face has an elongated muzzle with distinctive characteristics such as a red stripe down the middle and protruding blue ridges on the sides. It also has red nostrils and lips, a yellow beard and white tuffs. The areas around the genitals and the anus are multi-colored, being colored red, pink, blue, scarlet, and purple. They also have pale pink ischial callosities. The coloration of the animal is more pronounced in dominant adult males. Both sexes have chest glands which are used in olfactory communication.

To enter the contest all you have to do is comment below with what kind of animal you think is interesting enough in real life to be made into a piece of home decor for your your home and why! The contest ends August 31st! I will announce the winner via Facebook so make sure you are a Fan or you will miss out. As per my usual contest rules the winner has 48 hours to contact me with their contact information so that I can ship them their candle holders.   If I don’t hear from the winner in 48 hours I will choose a new winner right away.  You don’t want to miss out on this great contest! Free shipping in the US only.  International shipping fees apply.

EcoPlum Where It Pays To Buy Green

EcoPlum Logo

One aspect of ethical or green shopping that has seriously been lacking are reward programs. Reward programs are huge right now and even the smallest of stores are doing it successfully. It has been difficult to find green businesses that do something other than donate a percentage of your purchase to a specific cause. I think that is a wonderful idea, don’t get me wrong, but non-ethical shoppers are more likely to do something when incentivized. EcoPlum is a place where you can get that done at one online shop. EcoPlum has the usual break down of ecofriendly products to choose from leaving no real reason not to shop and earn rewards. Every dollar you spend at their store earns you one EcoChipz before shipping or taxes. After you have earned a minimum of 150 Ecochipz you can begin redeeming your rewards. You can see a breakdown of the rewards on if you click here. You have a few options to choose from. The program also kind of forces the shopper to be loyal as the first sign of incentive is after you spend $150 and you get a choice of 3 different $5 options. I know that doesn’t seem like much after spending $150 but it is definitely a decent start. The more ethical companies start doing this ( EcoPlum isn’t the first I have seen that offers a reward program but they definitely have a much wider variety than many I have seen previously.) the better the incentives can become. I hope one day they can manage to compete with non-ethical companies and give them a run for their money!

About EcoPlum is the green shopping rewards site with ecofriendly products and green living ideas that makes it fun, easy and rewarding to go green. Under our loyalty program, buy green at EcoPlum online to earn EcoChipz rewards points, good for coupons in our shop or donations to environmental causes. We carefully select stylish and unique green products from vendors who earned third party sustainability certification, carry notable eco-labels, or make products primarily from recycled materials. EcoPlum’s mission is to foster environmental stewardship by informing, empowering and inspiring a community of people to be conscious of their daily habits, purchases, and impact on the world’s limited resources. A trusted source for information on how to be green, we have a wide array of original content and a strong social media presence. EcoPlum’s online shop carries ecofriendly clothing, green accessories, fair trade jewelry, safe cosmetics and skincare, and other environmentally friendly products. We produce monthly columns from industry experts on Eco Friendly Beauty, Green Entertainment, Green Interior Design, Local and Organic Cooking, Greening Our Schools, Green Fashion and other EcoLiving topics. Every day, we curate the best green tips and videos, and breaking environmental news for our readers, while encouraging them to share this content and their own. We are also a resource for local green business listings, recycling information, restaurant and travel listings, book and video recommendations, and much more.
