EcoPlum Where It Pays To Buy Green

EcoPlum

One aspect of ethical or green shopping that has seriously been lacking are reward programs. Reward programs are huge right now and even the smallest of stores are doing it successfully. It has been difficult to find green businesses that do something other than donate a percentage of your purchase to a specific cause. I think that is a wonderful idea, don’t get me wrong, but non-ethical shoppers are more likely to do something when incentivized. EcoPlum is a place where you can get that done at one online shop. EcoPlum has the usual break down of ecofriendly products to choose from leaving no real reason not to shop and earn rewards. Every dollar you spend at their store earns you one EcoChipz before shipping or taxes. After you have earned a minimum of 150 Ecochipz you can begin redeeming your rewards. You can see a breakdown of the rewards on if you click here. You have a few options to choose from. The program also kind of forces the shopper to be loyal as the first sign of incentive is after you spend $150 and you get a choice of 3 different $5 options. I know that doesn’t seem like much after spending $150 but it is definitely a decent start. The more ethical companies start doing this ( EcoPlum isn’t the first I have seen that offers a reward program but they definitely have a much wider variety than many I have seen previously.) the better the incentives can become. I hope one day they can manage to compete with non-ethical companies and give them a run for their money!

About EcoPlum is the green shopping rewards site with ecofriendly products and green living ideas that makes it fun, easy and rewarding to go green. Under our loyalty program, buy green at EcoPlum online to earn EcoChipz rewards points, good for coupons in our shop or donations to environmental causes. We carefully select stylish and unique green products from vendors who earned third party sustainability certification, carry notable eco-labels, or make products primarily from recycled materials. EcoPlum’s mission is to foster environmental stewardship by informing, empowering and inspiring a community of people to be conscious of their daily habits, purchases, and impact on the world’s limited resources. A trusted source for information on how to be green, we have a wide array of original content and a strong social media presence. EcoPlum’s online shop carries ecofriendly clothing, green accessories, fair trade jewelry, safe cosmetics and skincare, and other environmentally friendly products. Every day, we curate the best green tips and videos, and breaking environmental news for our readers, while encouraging them to share this content and their own. We are also a resource for local green business listings, recycling information, restaurant and travel listings, book and video recommendations, and much more.
The EcoPlum Blog, Confessions of a Reformed Consumer, follows founder Gia Machlin on her personal journey from an over-consuming, waste-producing materialist to an informed environmentalist. Gia and EcoPlum have been featured on Green is Good Radio, WOR Talk Radio, Crain’s New York, and in many other business publications. EcoPlum is a Green America approved business.

Buffalo Shrimp Salad

Buffalo Shrimp Salad
Buffalo Shrimp Salad

Hot and Spicy are two of my fave words! Hot and spicy shrimp salad just makes my mouth water thinking about it! If you are a vegetarian you can substitute the shrimp for tofu or even tempeh.
I found this recipe on a list of Super Bowl party foods which I feel is a different but probably healthier choice from other options one would usually have on game day. I will say that this recipe would be good for parties (heck even dinner) and can be used for a multitude of different events from spring through summer depending on the event and theme, I’m just not sure how it would go over on game day but I could be wrong. The buffalo shrimp salad is quick, delish and could be a different take on what Super Bowl food can look like.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup low-fat organic buttermilk
1/2 cup organic sour cream
2 teaspoons organic apple cider vinegar
3 tablespoons fresh organic parsley, chopped
2 teaspoons organic chives, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons organic garlic, minced
Sea Salt and fresh ground pepper
2 heads organic romaine lettuce, torn into pieces (4 cups)
2 cups organic carrots, grated
2 cups organic celery, sliced
1/2 cup organic scallions, sliced
2 tablespoons organic vegetable oil
2 tablespoons Brummel & Brown or organic butter
2 pounds medium shrimp, peeled and de-veined
1/4 cup bottled buffalo-wing sauce or hot sauce

DIRECTIONS:
1. Combine buttermilk, sour cream, apple cider vinegar, parsley, chives and garlic in a bowl
2. Stir well and season with salt and pepper.
3. Chill for 30 minutes.
4. Toss lettuce, carrots, celery and scallions with buttermilk dressing in a large bowl.
5. Place in serving bowl.
6. Warm a large skillet over medium-high heat.
7. Add oil and butter.
8. When butter sizzles, add shrimp and cook, stirring, until opaque, about 4 minutes.
9. Add buffalo-wing sauce, stir to coat shrimp and cook 1 minute longer.
10. Pour shrimp and sauce over salad.

Cocoon Facial Cleanser

Petal Purity
Petal Purity

You must know I love body scrubs because I write about exfoliating all of the time! I generally like to make my own but sometimes you don’t have time for a fresh beauty treatment so you must go to the next best thing! If you have to purchase a cosmetic or beauty product make sure you are choosing a responsible one. Remember whatever ingredients are in the product are going in and on your body. Cocoon Apothecary has a wide variety of skin care products that are perfect for the green beauty inside all of us.  You can see for yourself in their ingredient listings.  Nothing crazy in there.  You can pronounce all of the ingredients and probably have seen most of them in nature. I am actually drawn to the site simply because I think it is pretty. It is simple and almost elegant much like their products. No flashy designs or adds to confuse the customer, their products speak for themselves which speaks volumes about the kind of business Cocoon Apothecary really is.

Nubius Organics, Yet Another Green Place to Shop

Besides bringing environmental and animal issues to light The Green Beagle finds it just as important to seek out companies that have green hearts and minds. I want you to do business with companies that make being green their business. I know it is difficult because many companies feign their environmentalism but if you know what to look for you can make the right decisions.
Nubius Organics about us section had a blurb that summed up exactly how I felt when starting my green mission ” But how? Where to start? There’s so much information out there – much of it overwhelming and difficult to fit into our lifestyles. It’s hard to know where to begin to be able to make a difference. The most consistent recommendation is to start slowly. Start small and even the most incremental changes will start to set free your inner environmentalist and things will just keep going from there! Please sign up for our weekly newsletter to keep apprised of simple tips and useful information that will help you on your way to green living!” I think this is one of the truest statements many of us have said at times.
Nubius Organics carries many of the popular green brands such as Chelsea Green Publishing, Under the Nile, Eco Bags and so on but they also carry a few I haven’t heard of. Nubius Organics carries a wide varieties of items for children, home, fashion and lifestyle. Their site is pretty cute to boot!
I always say it but I will say it again. It is our duty to support green minded businesses. I know the greenest way to be is to not shop at all but being realistic and understanding our materialistic nature we must do our part to research and support businesses that do research and support our environment. The only what to make change is to change ourselves! If you must shop spend your money at stores like Nubius Organics.

The FURminator

The FURminator

The FURminator

It’s that time of year where your fur baby is shedding to puff up for their winter coat. Personally my I have to vacuum and dust everyday to keep us from being over whelmed by fur from all 4 of our little lovies. The last time we took our pups to the local pet store they recommended The FURminator a million times to us. They even brushed out both of our babies to show us how well it worked.
I’m not going to lie that sucker literally got the hair off in no time flat and for whatever reason the pooches didn’t even put up their normal fight about being brushed. The groomer at the store even said you could use it on cats (of which we have 2) if we wanted. The little button on the top of the brush even removes the hair from the brush for you.
I am seriously in love with The FURminator. My house needs to be vacuum and dusted only 3 times a week now haha. If you haven’t tried The FURminator yet and you are being overwhelmed by your pets shedding I really do suggest it. The FURminator is a little pricey but to be honest it was completely worth it. If you prefer to take your pet to be groomed go ahead but apparently this is the very brush they are all using.
Right now Only Natural Pet Store is having a pretty cool sale to help reduce the cost of your FURminator Coupon Code NATURALPET15 – 15% Off Only Natural Pet Brand Products!

Donation Parties

Little Shelter Rescue

I went to a friends house last weekend who was having a sort of party extravaganza and all that she required was that each attendee bring something for a local shelter called Little Shelter that she rescued her dogs from. She invited her other friends who did Avon, Scentsy, 31 gifts, passion parties, and someone who made amazing cake truffles. She made a ton of food and had drinks galore lol (the best way to get tons of donates is to get and keep everyone tipsy). The event was a hit and there was plenty to donate. It made me think how can I get this to spread to other areas and get people do to this regularly.
Rescues need all of the help they can get and no one wants to see happy healthy animals put down. It is a horrible process that even has me tearing up just writing about it. After seeing the success of this party I think everyone should do it for any event you have. Go to a dollar store if you have to to purchase supplies. You can ask for rescue donations at birthday parties, weddings (I have seen it on Tori & Deans wedding show), holiday parties, or even do what my friend did and invite other hostesses who sell their own merchandise to bring in a larger crowd.
Animal rescuing is something so near and dear to my heart. My first rescue Skye was in such a horrible state when I adopted her and 10 years and 3 additional rescues later she is healthy happy and in the most loving home ever. She is the sweetest dog even after what she had to suffer for the first year 1/2 of her life. Every dog deserves that chance.
If you throw a donation party post pictures on our Facebook page and comment under this post which shelter the donations went to after you have donated and I will send you something awesomely green!

No Impact Man

No Impact Man

No Impact Man

I know there are other similar books like No Impact Man, telling the no waste time period story out there but I think it is important for us to read them all. We can learn something from everyone’s story. To take a no waste challenge on for an entire year is extremely difficult for anyone and more so in Manhattan which is a land of grab,go and throw. You notice is in the constantly over flowing garbage’s on the streets or on garbage day outside of apartment buildings. You can see many of the items being disposed of are items that are easily recyclable or reusable. When I lived in Manhattan I was totally one of those people who could take perfectly good items home to reuse. I know it happens in many more area’s than just Manhattan but living there gives you many good examples despite the green good works that do go on there.
As for No Impact Man, I respect a family wanting to take on this challenge. I haven’t read the book yet but I can only imagine what one would have to think of doing with items that may not be recyclable and having to find another use for them. I am looking forward to reading about this family and what they learned from this experience. I hope you do too.

Description:
This book chronicles the adventures of writer Colin Beavan, his wife and their one-year old daughter as they embark on a year long journey to live waste-free for one year in downtown Manhattan, while of course still working regular jobs and living as normally as possible. The author manages to capture his own shortcomings with candor and wit and offers surprising revelations in the process that all of us can relate to in one way or another. It’s an impressive undertaken, engagingly told, which will absolutely inspire you to rethink your own lifestyle habits. An eco-activists must read!!

Chico Bag - Halloween Limited Edition

Pizza Pankcakes??

Pizza Pancakes

Pizza Pancakes

I saw this on another blog this morning but I knew this couldn’t be the only recipe. Incase you didn’t know half of The Green Beagle Team is one hearty Italian lady and I love me some pizza. That may sound stereotypical but what can I tell you, it’s true! When I saw a recipe for pizza pancakes I started drooling almost immediately!  I have never really been a fan of breakfast foods for breakfast anyway.  I prefer lunch or dinner type meals in the morning.  Also, why have I not thought about making these already? Different cheese, vegetable and herb mixtures are popping into to my mind and apparently into others as well seeing as there are plenty of pizza pancake variations out there. I decided to go a little simple with this one because your first attempt isn’t always your best when it comes to cooking new things.

Ingredients
•2 cups organic baking mix
•1 cup organic fat free milk or a plain soy milk (A flavor, Almond or Rice milk may make the batter too sweet but that could be a yummy option as well)
•2 organic eggs
•3/4 cup shredded fresh mozzarella
•1/4 cup grated organic Parmesan cheese
•4 leaves fresh organic basil chopped
•1/4 teaspoon organic oregano
•1/4 teaspoon organic parsley
•1/4 teaspoon organic garlic powder (or fresh minced garlic)
•Organic Tomato sauce for dipping
•Parmesan Cheese to sprinkle on top

Instructions

1. Heat griddle or skillet and grease with olive oil, if necessary.
2. In a large bowl, combine the baking mix, basil, oregano, parsley * garlic powder.
3. Then combine eggs and milk and stir into dry ingredients until moistened and evenly mixed.
4. Add the cheeses into the mixture and mix.
5.Pour a little less than a 1/4 cup onto hot griddle & cook until bubbles form on top. Flip until you reach desired color and texture of your pancake.
6. Once all pancakes are cooked you can cut the pieces into wedges and garnish with fresh basil leaves and Parmesan cheese. You can also put a cup of tomato sauce on the side for dipping or drizzle the sauce on top of the pancakes.
