4. Add a cup of water to the plaster of Paris in the plastic bag. Knead the mixture until the plaster and water have fully combined.

If you really want to make this craft green teach these little print makers the importance of the beaches and oceans and keeping them clean. Talk to them about erosion and make this an all around project that has meaning and a lesson. Look up the items collected on the Internet to find out what they are and where they came from.

Is Your 4th Going to be Green?

Green Fourth of July

I understand that the 4th is all about the red, white and blue but let us not for get the most important color in our pallet GREEN! As with many holiday’s the 4th of July is full of over indulgence. You may not be able to keep fireworks from going off but you can do your part to make your 4th of July as green as possible.

1. Don’t use disposables. If you are having a party or going to one please make sure to use reusable or biodegradable  utensils. If you prepare ahead of time you can keep the dish use to a minimum and there are plenty of kinds of drink cup markers to keep everyone from using every cup in the house.

2. Purchase your menu as locally and organically as you can. No need to go crazy with your food. BBQ menus can be simple and healthy. No one wants to eat a ton of food on a hot summer day anyway.

3. Keep the noise pollution to a minimum. Fireworks are going to be loud enough so there is no reason to have music blasting at every house on the block. Be considerate of your neighbors, animal and people alike.

4. Get active! It is nice outside go swimming, bike riding, or for a walk. Set up a volley ball or badmitton net. There are plenty of activities you can do on summer days and since the days are longer you have alot of time to stay out and play.

5. Use solar lighting or candles once it gets dark. I know everyone wants to stay out long enough to see the fireworks but don’t leave a million lights on outside it is just plain wasteful. The sun shines much longer in the summer so let solar lighting gather as much as it can to save up for the evening festivities!

6. Don’t use fireworks! There are plenty of community/town shows to see. Fireworks are really harmful to the environment so the less they are used the better. Not only are they dangerous and illegal in some states they are just for vanity. Create your ownhome made light crafts or watch other peoples. You don’t need to celebrate America’s independence with fireworks, create your own less harmful celebrations and traditions.  After all that is what we wanted independence for anyway right?

Fun 4th Craft

The 4th of July is almost here! Get ready for backyard BBQ’s and block parties galore! Don’t be left out of the fun. Fireworks are not good for the environment so make your own fun with everyday items you have around your house.

Fun 4th Craft

Supplies:
Craft knife
Thick rubber band
Paper clips
Sticker stars
Bendy straw
Glitter
Stickers/Glow in the Dark Stickers
Paint
Markers
Odds and ends from around the house

Directions:
1. Use a craft knife to cut a small X in the center of a plastic coffee lid.
2. Push one end of a rubber band up through the opening and stretch it around the center of a paper clip to keep it from pulling back through. Decorate the lid as patriotically as you want.
3. Cut the straw one 4-inch straight length and one 4 1/2-inch length with the bendable portion near the center. Shape a second paper clip into a small hook. Then slide it into the straight straw part & use it to pull the other end of the rubber band through.
4. Insert one end of the bendy straw through the protruding loop of the rubber band for a handle.
5. Then start to play!

BBQ Banana Boat

I found this recipe and had to share because it is way to yummy not too!!! The BBQ Banana Boat is delish to the millionth power! Remember to use as many organic ingredients as you can find and to create as little waste as possible.

BBQ Banana Boat

Ingredients:

1 Banana Per Person
Nutella (or chocolate chips of any kind)
O Organics Old Fashioned Creamy Peanut Butter, 18 Ounce Jars (Pack of 6)
Organic Marshmallows – 400g/14oz bag
Organic Hazelnut Graham Crackers
Any other fruit you might want to add
100% Recycled Aluminum Foil

Directions:

1. Peel one section off of a rip banana but do not fully remove it. Make sure to keep the peeled piece attached to the banana you will need it later.

2. Cut the peeled section out of the banana but be careful not to cut all of the way through the banana.

3. Add all of the ingredients you want! Remember this isn’t a huge section to fill up a little will go a long way.

4. Put the peeled back peel back in place and wrap the banana in aluminum foil or you can use an aluminum tray and put all of the bananas on the grill at once.

5. Let the bananas sit on the BBQ for 3-5 minutes depending on how BBQ’d you want your banana.

6. Once the banana boats are removed let them sit for a little bit to cool. No need to burn yourself before you have your yummies!!!

For larger portions try to do the same with halved pinapple or other big fruit. I am not sure melons would do well because they are very water basted but perhaps a mango. Experiment with your favorite fruits and let us know how it went!
Remember to throw any unused food items into your compost pile and recycle what ever items you can.
