I wanted to find the funnest (for me) summer activity ever and I am almost positive I have done it. I am not sure if you can get a greener, more nature-esque activity that is any cooler in my book. I found this outstanding idea from a website called How To Build Fairy Houses. This activity can really be done any way you like. How fun would this be for a party or a school project? I think this idea can be used for many an educational reason but also for family time.  The materials are all from nature and as long as you are respectful of the surrounding plants and animals as well as the materials you collect/use you really can’t go wrong. Different areas will offer different options as will different seasons which make this project kind of really fun. Here is a list of materials that can be used:

Sticks
Rocks
Grass
Moss
Feathers
Seaweed
Seashells
Nuts
Pinecones
Acorns

Location:

Fairy Houses can be designed anyway you want. You can let your imagination go wild or use a design you have already seen. Find a quiet place away from roads or busy pathways. The base of a tree or the side of a rock are great places to build. Try to keep the house close to the ground to help keep the house stable and so a floor doesn’t have to be built. Sometimes you may find a special place in the low branches of a tree or bush if you are lucky.
Look for building areas in woods, beaches, meadows, and especially your own backyard! Use only natural materials to build the house. Try not to use anything artificial as it ruins the look and spirit of the fairy house idea. The idea of a fairy house is to look so natural that it is almost hidden. You never know what may choose to live in there! You could be helping a poor displaced animal or fairy who will forever be grateful.

Rules:

Be respectful of ALL living things in the surrounding building areas. Destroying nature to create your fairy house is not what a fairy would want and definitely not something nature would appreciate. Try not to disturb plants that are still living, such as ferns, mosses and flowers. Fairies are careful not to harm anything that is growing.

With all of the animals I have at my house the one thing I have to say I don’t think I do enough is clean all of their ears. I love nail polish! I change mine all of the time and I really love making it my own. What I don’t like is the smell and chemicals that go into making nail polish. I really can’t believe how long it has taken me to try Trader Joe’s Lavender Salt Body Scrub but I finally have and am in love! I used to purchase the same kind of scrub from Bath and Body Works or The Body Shop before their scrubs were $30 for a 6.8ozs of scrub that isn’t as effective as it used to be! I have been looking for a scrub of this caliber for a very long time and finally have found it at Trader Joe’s. I knew good ol’Joe would never let me down at only $6.00 for a big heaping jug bring it on!!
I couldn’t wait to use it. After slopping it on my skin felt amazing. If you are not used to oil based scrubs please be advised that if you use this scrub you should either mix it with shower gel or use shower gel after your scrub so you can get the oil off. I read some other reviews and people complained about the oil but if you are an experienced scrub user as myself you know better. If you have time to sit around in your bathrobe after you use the scrub or even put lotion on right after you will be OK.
I absolutely love this scrub. I have been dying for an actual salt scrub for so long. I do make my own but I wanted a responsible back up and refuse to purchase from Bath and Body or The Body Shop anylonger. There is no reason a body scrub should cost more than $6 if it is mostly natural ingredients!
I say right on Trader Joe’s! You have made me soo happy and will continue using your Lavender Salt Scrub until your recipe changes or price goes up!

Decorate….Naturally

This is a simple and truly elegant way to decorate your home for the fall or just for fun! You can change up the decorations every year and the best part is the materials are free. You can use these materials in garlands, to glue on to old home decor to make it look fresh and new!

Materials:
Pine-cones
Leaves
Acorns
Rocks
Twine or rope (what ever is lying around the house)
Hot glue gun

Directions:

1. Figure out your designs first. If you are using all of the same material for each garland separately this will be quick but if you want to change it up and alternate it is best to place it out first so you don’t get mixed up later.

2. Wrap and knot the twine around each pine-cone (you can use a dab of hot glue to make sure it stays). You should hot glue items like rocks, leaves, twigs or acorn’s.

3. Wait for the hot glue to dry. You can add glitter or pain to your fabulous new garlands. Dab them with essential oils so they can double as room fresheners as well (except for the pine cone which might smell on their own). Find my famous old broken hairclips, pins or buttons that you were needed an excuse to use and glue away!

4. Start hanging!! Place your garlands around your house to add some fall cheer to your rooms.

I love making my own spa and beauty treatments. I can use the ingredients I want and save money at the same time. Making your own beauty treatments can be fun and informative. It gives you the chance to learn about different properties that natural fruits, vegetables and herbs have.

Ingredients:

•1 organic egg

•1 teaspoon of organic coconut oil, warmed to room temperature

•1 teaspoon of organic lemon juice

•1 tablespoon of castile soap

•1/2 cup of distilled water

•5 drops of organic essential oil

Directions:

1. Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and consistent.

2. Put in fridge for 15 to 20 minutes to make sure everything has time to sit and mix. (this is an optional step you can use it right away)

3. Get in shower and wash hair. Keep in mind if you use very hot water you might actually cook the raw egg in this treatment.

4. If you have any shampoo left over you can put it in the fridge and save it but you should use it the next day. Keeping it past that is risky.
