DIY Organic Body Butter

DIY Body Butter

DIY Body Butter

I have just run out of body butter. This annoys me to no end and lately I have been annoyed at the prices of good quality body butters as well. I like my skin to be smoothed and moisturized just like everyone else but I don’t appreciate paying an arm and a leg for good ingredients. I am not sure why it didn’t occur to me to make my own as I have made plenty of other beauty products. I have almost all of these items at home with the exception of the raw shea butter. I have looked at a bunch of recipes for body butter so below is a compilation of a few I liked best. If you make your own you can customize the scents and as you get better at it you can add other ingredients specific to your skin type. A little goes a long way with making your own so even if the ingredients may be a little costly you can make much more than what you would purchase at a store.

Ingredients:
1 cup Organic Raw Shea Butter
½ cup Organic coconut oil
½ cup Organic almond oil
Several drops essential oils like these Organic Pure Essential Oils Set (a few drops goes a long way so be careful) *Not all essential oils are skin friendly or child friendly. Please do your research before adding.
Glass or plastic jar or canister to put the butter in.

Instructions:
1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil in the top of a double boiler.
2. Remove from heat and let cool for 30 minutes.
3. Stir in almond oil and essential oils of your choosing.
4. Place oil mixture in freezer or outside to chill for 20 minutes.
5. Whip until the mixture has a buttery looking consistency.
6. Put in canister or jar.

Tips:
You can use what ever oils you prefer if you have allergies or preferences, just make sure you keep the ratio recipe ratio is 75% solid to 25% liquid.
The chilling step is the most important. If you don’t let the mixture cool properly, your butter won’t whip correctly or stay whipped. About 20 minutes in the freezer for this recipe works best. Make sure you scrape down the sides before mixing.

Banana Honey Dog Treats

Brie's Banana and Honey Dog Treats

Banana Honey Dog Treats

The holidays are as usual a time of giving but can get expensive! A thoughtful gift for someone who you don’t know what to give or for pet lovers is homemade dog treats. I always find it more thoughtful to make a gift. I know we are all very busy this time of year so here is a simple recipe that is healthy for the pooches. Our pets take such good care of us it is only right for us to show them appreciation during the time of year when everyone is spending time with their loved ones.
I found this recipe here at Allrecipies.com which had a variety of other simple dog treats to choose from.

Ingredients:
2 Cups of Water
2 Organic Bananas Mashed
2 Tbs Raw Honey
1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
1 Organic Egg
4 1/4 Cups Organic Flour (adjust for any allergies)
1 Tsp Baking Powder

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Lightly grease 2 large baking sheets.
3. Combine water, mashed bananas, honey, vanilla, and egg in a large bowl.
4. Stir in the flour and baking powder.
5. Beat dough with an electric mixer on medium speed until ingredients are thoroughly combined for about 1 to 2 minutes.
6. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until no longer sticky, 5 to 8 minutes.
7. Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into mini shapes with your favorite cookie cutter.
8. Place dough shapes on prepared baking sheets.
9. Bake in preheated oven until cookies are lightly browned, about 20 minutes.
10. Turn off the oven and leave cookies until thoroughly dry and crisp, 30 to 40 more minutes.
11. Remove baking sheets from oven and allow cookies to cool on pans for 10 minutes. Transfer cookies to wire rack to fully cool.

Green is a Holiday Color for a Reason!

Green Christmas

The holidays are very near or maybe almost ending for some! It is a time for sharing and caring not only about friends and family but the environment too. The holiday’s are about over indulging and over doing but that doesn’t have to be. Here are some tips to make your season greener and brighter!

* Re-gift all you want! There is nothing wrong with putting unwanted/unused past gifts to good use! We do it all the time with the 3R’s is there any difference if you recieve something you think someone else would enjoy more?

* Send out e-cards or eco-Cards. I know there are traditionalists that say receiving an e-card is lazy or unfestive however it saves on many trees and garbage that will be thrown out after New Years. There are many companies around that make cards with that have a low impact on the environment so if you must have something tangible then use those. For example Good Greetings LLC, Pear Tree Greetings or Season’s Greenings.

* Gift Grab Bags! To cut down on spending and large amounts of wrapping paper try picking names out of a hat with your family so you only have to purchase 1 gift. Grab Bags are fun too! Set a price limit and go to town! The holiday’s aren’t about how many prezzies you get or how much money you spend. They are about family and togetherness! You can be more relaxed and enjoyable when you aren’t worried about money.

* Holiday Lights. The winter holiday’s are quite bright with all the homes decorated with millions of lights and lawn ornaments. I understand it gets darker earlier and decorations are always pretty to look at but try to purchase energy saving lights or solar powered ones. Decadance does not need to carry over into all aspects of the holidays! Give yourself the gift of lower energy bills during the holidays. Try lights like these Multi Color C9 LED Holiday Lights – Energy Saving – Outdoor or Indoor.

* Recycled Wrappings. Now that you have presents that will need to be wrapped try using recycled content paper or bags. I personally prefer bags or boxes because they last much longer and can be reused multiple times. If you keep an eye out for particular patterns and colors they can even be used for more than just the holidays. The Gift Wrap Company Festive Tidings Eco-wrap, Gift Bag, and Ribbon Assortment, 10-Count

* Be crafty! There is nothing wrong with making meaningful gifts either! It is the thought that counts after all…right? Bake some cookies or winter breads to give to co-workers or neighbors. You could even plan a cookie exchange. You can find plenty of crafty gifts on the internet and use what you have around the house. Be creative and green! Best of Christmas Ideas

* Decorations. Speaking of being crafty why not craft your own holiday decorations! This way you get exactly the decorations you are looking for, you save money and have a super fun time doing it. Making your own holiday decorations can double as gifts for others while speding quality time with your family and friends. Simply Handmade: 365 Easy Gifts & Decorations You Can Make (Crafts)

I’ve got Your Stimulus right here!

how-it-works-user-home[1]

I have found perhaps the most exciting eco-friendly site I’ve ever seen! I knew there had to be businesses like these out in cyber space and I am proud to announce there definitely are!!! GoingGreenToday.com  takes your lifestyle and transforms it in to the routine that not only saves the earth but saves you money! Going Green Today assesses your households personal carbon foot-print and promises to reduce it by 35% after participating their 30,60 or 90 day program. For a fee of $29.00 and after taking their carbon footprint assessment survey they will transform your life into a green-haven  that could save you up to $2000 annually. If that isn’t awesome enough here comes the best part…..half of that $29.00 fee goes to organizations that work to stop global warming!!! Nobody can loose in this situation! To date GoingGreenToday.com  has saved their users $183,597.00 and have reduced their total carbon output by 265,895 co2 lbs! For those of you that are new to going green this is a great way to save yourself money as well as learn helpful tips you can use in everyday life and hopefully pass them on.

A different kind of 12 Step Program

So there is all this stimulus talk going around and all sorts of people telling you about how you should be spending it.   Besides the bills we all have to catch up on, possibly repairing the house or buying those precious little things you have been doing with out lately.  I read an article recently about making your stimulus green and their recommendations were simple. These are measures everyone can take now with or with out a stimulus! Not only will taking these steps and continuing them help you save money but also you will be helping save the environment.

1. Only shop locally, purchase local items when possible.  Help stimulate your local economy. Harvesting support for locally grown food: Lessons learned from the be a local hero, buy locally grown campaign

2. Repair/replace leaky fixtures in your home. You can conserve water, save on heat, gas and electric. Green Toys Tool Set

3. Buy a GPS and it set to take the most efficient route to your destination.  You can save on gas and time management. Garmin – nüvi 255W GPS. (click link to purchase)

4. Buy & carry reusable shopping bags, most stores sell them for under $5.00.  There will be less clutter in your home as well as creating less waste. Green Bee 3pk Reusable Shopping Bags W/Pouch

5. Buy recycled content items such as toilette tissue, paper towels, tissues, trash bags, ink toner, and copy paper. 100% Recycled Facial Tissue – 100ct

6. Don’t buy disposable kitchenware, purchase things that are reusable.  Doing the dishes really isn’t that bad. Dapple Dish Liquid – 17 oz.

7. Use a bicycle or walk if/when possible.  That is good for you and the environment.  Or even car pool with friends and neighbors when you can! Shop for Cycling Gear at Eastern Mountain Sports
8. Turn things off when they aren’t being used. The Home Energy Diet: How to Save Money by Making Your House Energy-Smart (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)

9. Recycle what you can.  Even though some places may not have the best programs doing something is better than nothing. Suncast Recycle Bin Kit BH183PK

10. Buy a few reusable wate r bottles to keep with you.  You can rotate bottles during washes. Base Brands 16-Ounce Reduce WaterWeek Bottle, Set of 5
11. Do your bill paying and banking online you can save your receipts & statements.  Use e-vites for invitations and cards. ONLINE BANKING ORGANIZER bill pay monthly record book
