Is Your 4th Going to be Green?

Green Fourth of July

I understand that the 4th is all about the red, white and blue but let us not for get the most important color in our pallet GREEN! As with many holiday’s the 4th of July is full of over indulgence. You may not be able to keep fireworks from going off but you can do your part to make your 4th of July as green as possible.

1. Don’t use disposables. If you are having a party or going to one please make sure to use reusable or biodegradable  utensils. If you prepare ahead of time you can keep the dish use to a minimum and there are plenty of kinds of drink cup markers to keep everyone from using every cup in the house.

2. Purchase your menu as locally and organically as you can. No need to go crazy with your food. BBQ menus can be simple and healthy. No one wants to eat a ton of food on a hot summer day anyway.

3. Keep the noise pollution to a minimum. Fireworks are going to be loud enough so there is no reason to have music blasting at every house on the block. Be considerate of your neighbors, animal and people alike.

4. Get active! It is nice outside go swimming, bike riding, or for a walk. Set up a volley ball or badmitton net. There are plenty of activities you can do on summer days and since the days are longer you have alot of time to stay out and play.

5. Use solar lighting or candles once it gets dark. I know everyone wants to stay out long enough to see the fireworks but don’t leave a million lights on outside it is just plain wasteful. The sun shines much longer in the summer so let solar lighting gather as much as it can to save up for the evening festivities!

6. Don’t use fireworks! There are plenty of community/town shows to see. Fireworks are really harmful to the environment so the less they are used the better. Not only are they dangerous and illegal in some states they are just for vanity. Create your ownhome made light crafts or watch other peoples. You don’t need to celebrate America’s independence with fireworks, create your own less harmful celebrations and traditions.  After all that is what we wanted independence for anyway right?

2011 Green Resolutions

2011 Green Resolutions

2011 Green Resolutions

As we say goodbye to 2010 and hello to 2011 it is that wonderful time of year where you make promises to yourself that you never keep. Instead of promising yourself things like saving money, losing weight or being a better person turn it all around and make a resolution that could encompass all of those resolutions you never stick to! I have compiled a list of resolutions that should be much easier to stick to that I hope will become a part of your everyday life.

1. Just say NO to disposables! Always keep reusable bags, bottles and utensils in your car, office, or house. Many stores now give discounts to you if you BYOB (bring your own bag or bottle). I have reusable utensils in my office, at home and I even bring them with me when I go out just in case. It may sound nuts but it works and can save you lots of money. Reusable Shopping Bags, Good Life Water Bottles Order Here!,

2. Educate yourself! Promise to learn even a little about your impact on our environment. Investigate where your purchases come from or at least investigate your purchase impact. Your small changes can make huge differences in the way you live your life for everyone. Going Green Today Click here!, Environmental Impact Assessment: A Practical Guide

3. Plant Something! When the time comes this year plant something. It doesn’t matter what and it really doesn’t take that much effort. Contribute to the environment, you might like it! Plant Trees as a Gift, Organic Seeds

4. Recycle! I still know many people who don’t care about recycling. I know some area’s don’t even have adequate recycling facilities or systems but take it upon yourself. Go to a bottle return or check out the items you are buying some companies do exchange programs. Talk to people in your community and see what they do or if they would be interested in starting a recycling system locally. There are many green companies now that are willing to take your garbage and upcycle it into something else! Flings Recycle 4-pack Bin, Rubbish!: Reuse Your Refuse

5. Donate! Give a donation to an environmental/animal charity. There are plenty out there that all need support. You can donate even $1 or purchase from their online stores. That could be a great excuse for why you had to go on a mini-shopping spree! Help raise money for Sierra Club., Adopt An Animal At To Help Conserve Wildlife!, or Become a member of WSPA and help end the inhumane treatment of animals around the world..

6. Buy Local! Make an effort to purchase as much as you can from local businesses and farmers. If you help your local community it will help you and your family just as much. There is a responsibility that has been forgotten about regarding our local communities. Everyone has gotten so used to taking care of our own spaces while damaging others. We have forgotten the importance of community and involvement. The Locavore’s Handbook: The Busy Person’s Guide to Eating Local on a Budget,

7. Travel Efficiently! Instead of running errands all week pick 1 day you can get it all done. Make lists, get out your coupons, and figure out the most efficient route to get to all of the places you need to get to. You will save on gas, money and time. No more forgetting to get something or having to run out last minute. It may also save on your car maintenance costs if you are effective enough. If you own a GPS set all of the destinations and have the GPS give you the quickest route to all of the places. You might just be surprised at all the time and money save. Garmin Portable GPS Navigator, Recycled Note Pads or they have one of this for almost everywhere nyc: A Curated Guide of Inspired and Unique Locally Owned Eating and Shopping Establishments in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island

8. Clean up your Act! You spend alot of time in your home and you like it to be clean. Instead of using all of the hyped up soaps, cleaners and detergents try to go green. Method makes amazing products right here in the USA that are safe for the environment and your family. There are plenty of other cleaning companies that are concerned with the environment and create their products as such. Try replacing the soaps, detergents, cleaners, wipes, dryer sheets and dusting products with green companies. You will save money, the environment and have an exceptionally clean and lovely smelling place to live. Method Biodegradable & Non-toxic Bathroom Detox Cleaning Kit or Eco-Discoveries,

New Twist on Wee Wee Pads

I know you might be thinking who cares about wee wee pads it’s about to be Christmas but they are incredibly expensive especially in multi-dog homes and they are just like diapers.  Who needs the added expense or garbage.  After seeing a commercial for Shamwow I got an idea! We have 2 medium/large dogs and from living in New York City for so long our older dog is used to using a pad and going out side. Our puppy doesn’t have that good of a concept of going outside. Now that we are in a house we needed something that was much less wasteful.

Shamwoware absorbent, washable, reusable and last for a long time. I will admit they do not last forever but we do wash and disinfect them more than regularly. This is an excellent way to avoid waste for wee-wee pad trained dogs. You have to put something reusable under the pad as well because the Shamwows don’t prevent anything from going through to the floor but we bought a plastic mat from a dish drying rack and use that to go underneath. Being that the holiday’s are right here this is a perfect last minute gift for your pets or pet loving loved ones!

Green Thanksgiving

Green Thanksgiving

Green Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is almost here and I know you might be wondering how you can make your holiday meal as green as possible so I have been doing my research! After reading many green articles these are the points I have seen the most:

1. Go Vegetarian! The clearest way to go green is to not buy a turkey and just have a complete vegetarian meal. Meat eating has a serious effect on our environment. However I feel most people either don’t believe how bad it is or would say our 1 turkey won’t make a difference so I have an alternative. Find a turkey as locally as possible. Even ones you can kill yourself. I think this may have enough of an impact on your family to not want to eat any animals again. If that option is also not available go as organic, hormone free and free range as possible. Convincing people to go green isn’t always as quick a process as we would like so try to compromise without ruining the fun of the holiday.

2. Go Organic!Buy all of your foods and ingredients organically. Most local grocery stores carry organic brands. Don’t be fooled by all natural that isn’t regulated by the government so any company can safely say all natural and technically mean it.

3. Go Packageless! Find items with as little packaging as possible. Usually if you are buying fresh fruits and vegetables no packing is necessary just pick the items out of the bins. If packaging is a must try to find items that are packaged in reusable ways so after Thanksgiving you can use the packaging to give out left overs or store other food.

4. Go Potluck!: At any event it is only good manners to never go any where empty handed. Take advantage of this for large holidays. Ask each guest to bring 1 item and let you know ahead of time so you can plan accordingly. The host can save on money, no one will be stuck with massive amounts of left overs and if you also ask your guests to bring their own tupperware they can take home any left overs they want!

5. Go Reusable!Since this is a huge meal and you want it to look nice don’t use paper utensils. Go all out! Use the good stuff. I know washing dishes is a pain but again if people bring their own items and bring something to carry left overs in that cuts the amount of dishes you will use down considerably. This will also help you save water. You won’t be able to avoid doing dishes at all but if you set up an assembly line of a washer, dryer and then someone to put the dishes away it won’t be so much of a chore.

6. Use less energy! You will be cooking in the kitchen which will keep some of the house warm. There will also be many people in one area so instead of putting the heat on full blast use small decorative sand bags around windows and doors to keep the heat in. If it is too hot no need for the a/c just open a few windows around the house! It is winter after all so take advantage of the natural air conditioning.

7. Decorate Creatively! Reuse old decorations from last year. No need to buy new ones. When shopping for decorations make sure you look for ones you know will withstand the test of time. Also look online for decorations you can make out of house hold items or even ones you can incorporate into the dinner.

8. Stay Local!Participate in the 100-Mile Thanksgiving challenge from Treehugger. If you haven’t heard of it yet click here. It is very important to keep all of your meals as local as possible. This is a great way to keep local economies afloat as well as creating much less waste and pollution.

9. Give Back! The reason for Thanksgiving is to give thanks sooooo, in doing so maybe make it a new family tradition to plant something in honor of the day. Plant Trees as a Gift.

10. Get Carbon Credits! If you cannot get out of staying local for your holiday event then you can purchase a carbon credit to make up for it. A carbon credit is a generic term for any tradable certificate or permit representing the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e).

11. Donate Your Fat! Many companies now use animal fats and oils to turn into bio fuel. This is a way businesses can save money. Check out your local businesses and see where you can make a donation.

12. Stay Green! Use the tips and ideas from this holiday and carry them over to every holiday or event you attend. The more often you incorporate greenness into your lifestyle the quicker it becomes second nature. You can also encourage others in your circle to do the same!

If you have any other tips or ideas let us know! We would love to hear them all!! Send in your pictures or tips and we will post them on the Beagle!
